Not crowded in September. Very enjoyable stay. Be mindful of food storage, there are bears in the area.
The walk-to sites are more secluded, but (obviously) require a bit of a walk. Good selection of trails within walking distance of the site, plus an EV charger near the welcome center which is ~1 mi walk to the sites.
Nice campground. Enough ranger programs and activities. Quiet hours after 19.00 so you can sleep easily. If you take a shower, there are 2 in the restroom next to the campground store which are cleaned a lot and they have the warmest water. 20 dollar per night, but there is no water, dump or electricity connection, only near the entrance.
We've always come here as a day trip. We just spent three nights in the campground. What a lovely place didn't see a ranger or host who didn't have a smile and always willing to help. Hands down one of our top camping trips. Will always remember. It's truly a gem nestled in the mountains of Virginia.
My family has been coming here for 60 years and we always have a great time. In many ways it is a throwback to another era, but they maintain everything very well and they always seem to be improving things. The sites are great, the hikes are good and plentiful, and the views are some of the best in the east. The ranger staff is always nice as well.
